What usually breaks in Waterloo furnaces

The most common furnace repairs we see in Waterloo are dirty flame sensors, failed hot surface igniters, blocked condensate drains, worn inducer motors and failed control boards. Which one you have depends a lot on when your house was built.

Laurelwood, Columbia Forest, Clair Hills and Eastbridge. These 1990s to 2010s neighbourhoods were built with builder-grade furnaces, and many are still running the original unit. At 15 to 25 years old, these furnaces fail in a predictable order: igniters and flame sensors first, then inducer motors, pressure switches and control boards. A noisy, rattling inducer at start-up is a common early warning.

Beechwood, Lakeshore and Westmount. Homes from the 1950s to 1970s are usually on their second or third furnace. The furnace itself is often fine; the problem is airflow. Old, undersized ductwork and too few returns make a high-efficiency furnace overheat and trip its limit switch, so it shuts off, cools down and starts again. That shows up as short-cycling or a house that never quite warms up.

Uptown and the older core. In older homes, we often find venting problems: a high-efficiency furnace vented through a side wall where snow drifts block the pipes, or an old chimney that's no longer safe for the water heater sharing it.

Furnace not working? Check these first

Before you call for heating repair, five quick checks solve a surprising number of no-heat calls in Waterloo:

  1. Thermostat: set to Heat, set a few degrees above room temperature, with fresh batteries.
  2. Power: the switch on or near the furnace (it looks like a light switch) is on, and the breaker hasn't tripped.
  3. Filter: a clogged filter can shut a furnace down on its high-limit safety. Swap it if it's grey.
  4. Exhaust and intake pipes: if your furnace vents out the side of the house, make sure snow or ice isn't covering the two plastic pipes. This is common after a heavy Waterloo snowfall or a drift along the side yard.
  5. Condensate drain: water around the furnace or a gurgling sound can mean a blocked drain, which stops a high-efficiency furnace from firing.

If you smell gas, don't touch switches. Leave the house and call Enbridge Gas from outside.

Repair or replace in Waterloo?

Repair is usually the right call when the furnace is under about 15 years old and the problem is a single part. Replacement starts to make sense when a furnace is near or past 20, needs a major part like a heat exchanger or control board, and has needed other repairs recently.

We'll give you a straight answer on which way we'd go and why. If replacement is on the table, our furnace installation service in Waterloo covers what's involved, and our furnace replacement cost guide shows typical regional price ranges. Your quote depends on the furnace size, the venting and how much ductwork needs changing.

If someone has already red-tagged your furnace, read our red-tagged furnace guide. A red tag means a gas technician found an unsafe condition; it doesn't automatically mean you need a new furnace.

When Waterloo furnaces tend to fail

Most no-heat calls in Waterloo come in two waves: the first real cold snap in late fall, when a furnace that sat all summer fires up with a dirty flame sensor or a seized motor, and the deep-cold stretches of January and February, when a furnace runs nearly nonstop and a weak part finally gives out.

A fall tune-up catches most of the first wave. The technician cleans the flame sensor, tests the igniter and inducer, checks the heat exchanger and confirms the condensate drain is clear. That won't stop every breakdown, but it moves the odds in your favour.

Furnace Repair in Waterloo: FAQs

Why is my furnace blowing cold air?

Usually the furnace has tried to light and failed, so the blower is running without heat. Common causes are a dirty flame sensor, a failed igniter, a blocked intake or exhaust pipe (often snow in Waterloo winters), or a blocked condensate drain. Check the thermostat is set to Heat, not just Fan On. If it keeps happening, call for a repair.

How much does furnace repair cost in Waterloo?

It depends on the part. Simple fixes like cleaning a flame sensor cost far less than replacing an inducer motor or control board. Across Waterloo Region, most repairs fall somewhere between a few hundred dollars and around a thousand, with major parts on older furnaces costing more. We'll quote the repair before we do it; your price depends on the furnace and the part.

Is it worth repairing a 20-year-old furnace?

Sometimes. A cheap fix like an igniter or flame sensor is usually worth doing on any furnace. A major repair on a 20-year-old unit often isn't, especially if it's needed other parts recently. Many original builder furnaces in Laurelwood and Clair Hills are at this point, so it's worth getting a repair-versus-replace opinion.

Can you fix a furnace that isn't a Lennox or York?

Yes. We install Lennox and York, but our licensed gas technicians repair all the common furnace brands found in Waterloo homes, including Carrier, Goodman, Trane, Rheem, Keeprite and older builder models. If a part has to be ordered, we'll tell you how long it should take and what your options are in the meantime.
